On a weathered wooden table,
I sat counting glass jars.
One,
two,
three,
ten…
to infinity.
I’m really good at counting jars.
But not with peanuts.
Inside each jar,
thousands of tiny peanuts were
crammed together.
They eluded my fingers.
They were golden yellow,
warm to the touch, but too small.
I stack the jars,
one on top of another,
creating a wall between my eyes and the rest of the room.
The peanuts remain
inside the jars,
hiding in the light,
in corners of time
I never thought to look.
I look at my hands,
they are stained with the dust
of the glass,
not the salt of the nuts.
If I break the jars,
the peanuts would scatter—
a golden sea on the floor.
But then,
what would I have left to count?
I pick up another jar.
Eleven.
